Sarah E. Mullen Quoted in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education

Lewis Rice member Sarah E. Mullen was featured in an article written by reporter Lois Elfman in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within college sports. Sarah highlights the 2021 U.S. Supreme Court decision in NCAA v. Alston, which reshaped the NCAA's regulation of educational benefits for student-athletes. She notes, “I think the dynamic is changing. Not just because student-athletes have found their voices on social issues they care about, but also because economic power is starting to shift more in favor of the college athlete."

Sarah regularly counsels educational institutions on student disciplinary and employment matters, including high-profile faculty separations and complex student conduct issues. She also has a depth of experience in Title IX matters. Sarah led the Lewis Rice team that was hired by the NCAA to assess its progress in implementing the recommendations set out in part of the External Gender Equity Review released in 2021. The assessment, completed in 2023, not only tracks the NCAA’s progress on implementation of the recommendations, but also helps communicate the NCAA’s blueprint to effect change and to sustain gender equity at its championships.
