An Overview of Opportunity Zones

Lewis Rice attorneys Michael T. Donovan and Ryan C. Furtick presented on Opportunity Zones on June 27, 2019 as part of St. Louis REALTORS' Urban Affairs Forum. The presentation provided an introduction to the Opportunity Zone program enacted as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Topics included the tax benefits associated with investing in an Opportunity Zone, operational rules for a Qualified Opportunity Fund (the investment vehicle for investing in Opportunity Zones), as well as issues with owning and leasing property located within a designated Opportunity Zone. They also covered a comparison of the Opportunity Zone program with Section 1031 like-kind exchanges.
