Lewis Rice is honored to be selected by Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) as the recipient of the 2025 Gerald R. Ortbals Law Practice Award. The award will be presented at LSEM’s annual For the Common Good Awards Luncheon on August 21, 2025 at the Missouri Athletic Club.
The Gerald R. Ortbals Award honors law firms that demonstrate exceptional commitment to pro bono legal service. This recognition highlights Lewis Rice’s long-standing partnership with LSEM and our shared dedication to serving the community. That relationship runs deep—long-time Lewis Rice member F. William McCalpin played a pivotal role in the creation of the Legal Services Corporation, established by Congress to provide civil legal aid to underserved individuals. Similarly, fellow alumnus R. Walston Chubb helped found the Legal Aid Society of Missouri (now LSEM) and was instrumental in shaping its mission to ensure equal access to justice for all.
“We are honored to receive this meaningful recognition from Legal Services of Eastern Missouri,” said Richard B. Walsh, Jr., Chairman of Lewis Rice. “Pro bono service has always been a priority at our Firm, and we are grateful for the leadership of Lewis Rice member Michael J. Hickey. As a dedicated member of LSEM’s Board of Directors, he has been instrumental in strengthening our partnership and expanding our impact.”
