Ralph represents developers, national and regional companies, tenants, and retailers in a variety of real estate matters. He handles construction, leasing, land acquisition, land use, purchase and sale contracts, development and easement agreements, pipeline and utility easements and licenses, financing, bond financing, zoning, and subdivision matters. Ralph acts as general counsel to a number of community improvement districts and transportation development districts in the state of Missouri. Best Lawyers has included Ralph in its annual list since 2009.
Tom serves as Practice Group Leader for the Medical Negligence practice group. He represents his clients in cases related to complex personal injury, including medical negligence and product liability; business; commercial and property tax litigation; and white collar crime. He has significant experience in property tax law, having successfully represented numerous major corporations and commercial property owners in real estate and business personal property cases across Missouri and many other states. Best Lawyers has included Tom in its annual list since 2013 and was named "St. Louis Litigation Real Estate Lawyer of the Year" for 2021.
Joe focuses his practice on media and communications law as well as intellectual property law, health law litigation, and complex commercial litigation. His clients include local and national major media representatives. Joe has tried cases in both the state and federal courts in Missouri and Illinois, and he has argued cases in the appellate and Supreme Courts in each state. Joe writes articles and publications in the fields of defamation and invasion of privacy law, the First Amendment, and media law in general. An adjunct professor at Washington University for 20 years, he teaches a course on communications law. Furthermore, Joe frequently appears on panels and conferences dealing with media law issues, and he authored the Missouri Bar CLE Tort Law chapters on Defamation, Invasion of Privacy, and Reputational Damages. Best Lawyers® has included Joseph in its annual list since 2005. He was named by Best Lawyers "St. Louis Litigation — First Amendment Lawyer of the Year" for 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2021 and "St. Louis Media Lawyer of the Year" for 2017 and 2024.
Rick serves as Chairman of Lewis Rice. He also maintains an active and growing practice focusing primarily in the area of complex commercial litigation including antitrust litigation, intellectual property, bet-the-company litigation, and securities litigation. Rick counsels transactional clients concerning associated risks in commercial transactions. His background includes litigating antitrust claims in the health care, bicycle component, aluminum products, agricultural products, professional sports, and fitness equipment industries. Rick litigates intellectual property matters in many areas including computer systems, mechanical apparatuses and systems, and chemical, electrical, and medical products and processes. Best Lawyers has included Rick in its annual list since 2008, and he has been named "Lawyer of the Year" for Litigation — Antitrust for 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2025. He was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Bet the Company Litigation in 2023.
Joel a valued member of the Firm's Management Committee. He is also a Co-chair of the Estate Planning & Probate Department. He focuses his practice on estate and gift planning, with an emphasis on transfer tax planning, business succession planning, estate and trust administration, preparation of estate and gift tax returns, and estate and gift tax controversies. Joel advises high-net-worth individuals and families with respect to their wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, charitable giving, and asset protection. He works with clients to leverage the benefits of exemptions from gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes in order to minimize taxes and preserve the value of family assets passing from generation to generation. Joel also works with clients to structure their estate plans to effectively address their individual and family considerations unrelated to tax savings.
