Lewis Rice Welcomes 14 Summer Associates

Lewis Rice is pleased to introduce its 14 summer associates. The Class of 2017 hails from six different law schools and 14 universities. More information on each summer associate follows.

Lewis Rice's Summer Associate Program runs 10 weeks and is designed to expose participants to the practice, personality, and culture of our Firm while enabling them to demonstrate the professional qualities that we seek in our young lawyers. Summer associates rotate through each of our departments, allowing them to perform varied work assignments in the Litigation, Corporate, Tax and Estate Planning Departments.

St. Louis Office

First year law students (JD 2019):

Rachel Kent, Washington University School of Law / College of the Holy Cross, B.A., Spanish, Minor in Education Studies

Prior to law school, Rachel served The International Institute of St. Louis in two capacities: As an AmeriCorps member of the Education Department, she recruited and trained volunteers and prospective clients for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services classes; and, as an English as a Second Language intern, Rachel developed special programs in the education department, facilitated citizenship classes and English classes, and conducted citizenship mock interviews. Rachel is from St. Louis, and she runs half-marathons.

Nicholas Lovejoy, University of Arkansas School of Law / University of Central Missouri, B.S.B.A., Economics

Nick wrestled for University of Central Missouri, and served as team captain his senior year. He is a member of the Missouri National Guard, and during his last two years of college, he assisted in leading monthly training exercises, organized soldiers, and was a member of the University’s Fighting Mules Battalion ROTC, in which he was a Military Science IV Cadet. At the University of Arkansas, Nick is ranked first in his class. Nick hails from Webb City, Missouri.

Griffin Lowry, Washington University School of Law / Columbia University, B.A., English and Comparative Literature

Griffin played football at Columbia University. As a legal intern for The Finn Group during his last semester of college, Griffin worked on commission attachments, talent agreements, location releases, and appearance releases. After graduation, he worked for two years as a AA-rated analyst for Credit Suisse in New York, working on various projects throughout his three rotations, including a global retention project and talent development and training programs. Griffin is from St. Louis, and attended Saint Louis University High.

Katherine Main, Saint Louis University School of Law / Truman State University, B.A., English

Kate finished in the top 10% of her 1L class. Prior to law school, Kate worked for nearly three years as a paralegal for Thompson Coburn and, most recently, for Meyerkord & Meyerkord in St. Louis. In this role, she assisted with legal research, correspondence, production, deposition and trial preparation, organization, and client communication.

Cole Newkirk, Saint Louis University School of Law / Lindenwood University, B.S., Finance, minor in Economics

During his last semester of college and the summer after he graduated, Cole worked for Simon Law Firm as a summer law clerk. There, Cole conducted legal research, reviewed documents in pending litigation, and summarized deposition transcripts for trial preparation. Cole captained the Lindenwood men’s soccer team, and he served as Vice President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Cole grew up in Kansas on his family’s farm.

Jack Terschluse, Washington University School of Law / Washington University in St. Louis, B.A., Political Science, minors in History and Leadership

Jack spent his first year of law school as a legal research assistant for Professor Lee Epstein, researching and presenting his findings on Supreme Court and federal cases. Last summer, he worked as a judicial intern for the Hon. Nancy J. Rosenstengel for the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois. Additionally, as fundraising chair for the Graduate Legacy Program at the Washington University Catholic Student Center, Jack developed new fundraising and outreach strategies, raising $15,000 in five-year pledges from fellow students. Notably, he is ranked in the top 5% of his class at Washington University. Jack’s hobbies include cycling, running, and weightlifting. A St. Louis native, he is a graduate of Chaminade College Preparatory School.

Charlotte Young, Washington University School of Law / Knox College, B.A., Political Science

After graduating Knox College in 2013, Charlotte began working as an audit response clerk at Haynes and Boone in Dallas, TX. While there, she researched pending litigation, working within the parameters of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and International Financial Reporting Standards to report matters as loss contingencies. Prior to law school, she served as a Judicial Intern for the Supreme Court of the United States where she prepared memoranda regarding news articles addressing court holdings for each Justice’s review. She also spent time in Aruba for an accounting assistant traineeship with BronTax and Partners. In this role, Charlotte compiled monthly financial statements for the firm’s corporate clientele and drafted correspondence and English legal letters. Charlotte enjoys yoga, equestrian sports, traveling, and photography.

Second year law students (JD 2018):

Tyler Friederich, Washington University School of Law / University of Illinois, B.S. Business Administration

Tyler is returning to Lewis Rice for a second summer. Prior to law school, Tyler worked for the U.S. Department of State as a financial management officer in Iraq and Pretoria, South Africa. While overseas, he oversaw the execution of multi-million dollar budgets and conducted audits to ensure financial compliance with federal laws and regulations. Additionally, Tyler was a finance officer for the Near East and South Asia Division of the CIA, providing financial support to the surrounding countries.

Sarah Noonan, Washington University School of Law / University of Kansas, B.S., Journalism

Sarah spent the previous summer with our Firm. At University of Kansas, she was a Big 12 heptathlete. After her college graduation, Sarah began working as a senior associate for ISNetworld Software Corporation in Dallas, where she reviewed labor documents and was the primary account manager for regulatory compliance for large clients in the oil and gas industry. In law school, Sarah serves as Executive Editor for the Washington University Law Review.

Melissa Powers, Saint Louis University School of Law / Saint Louis University, B.S.B.A., Accounting

Melissa also spent last summer with Lewis Rice. As an undergraduate, she was a legal intern for Kallial Law, LLC in St. Louis as well as an anti-money laundering compliance division intern for First Bank. Additionally, Melissa served as a legal research and writing teaching assistant in the pre-law department of Saint Louis University. She also interned at Lewis Rice before entering law school.

Jessica Quintero, Washington University School of Law / University of California at Los Angeles, B.A., Political Science

Jessica is returning for her second summer at Lewis Rice. Prior to law school, she held several positions in the U.S. Navy, including legal officer and, most recently, supply/logistics officer. As a legal officer, she investigated violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and she interviewed witnesses in connection with alleged violations including conspiracy, blackmail, and assault. She earned her Legal Officer Certification from the Naval Justice School in 2008.

Kristen Southworth, Southern Illinois University School of Law / The Colorado College, B.A., Religion

Kristen spent last summer at Feirich, Meger, Green, Ryan, a midsized corporate and defense firm located in Carbondale, Illinois. She gained significant exposure to insurance defense, real property, probate, tribal law, corporate liability, and international law. In law school, Kristen received CALI Awards for Academic Excellence in five classes, and she is a member of the Southern Illinois University Law Journal. Prior to law school, she owned and operated an organic farm in Campbell Hill, Illinois that supplied many of St. Louis’ best known restaurants.

Kansas City Office

Second year law students (JD 2018):

Chris Helt, Washburn University School of Law / Washburn University, B.A. Political Science

Chris spent last summer working as an intern for the Arizona Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Division, where he drafted memoranda analyzing fair housing, disability discrimination, and disparate treatment claims. As a law clerk for Goodell, Stratton, Edmonds, & Palmer in Topeka, Kansas this spring, he gained valuable experience in medical malpractice, worker's compensation, employment, and more. Chris serves as the Notes Editor for Washburn Law Journal and is ranked third in his class as Washburn.

Michael PappasUniversity of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, Kansas State University, B.S. Economics

Last summer, Michael worked as a legal intern for American Multi-Cinema, Inc. While there, he researched, analyzed, and drafted memoranda summarizing strategy on personal injury claims, contract disputes, and patent disputes. Last semester, Michael worked for UMKC Law Entrepreneurial Clinic advising local entrepreneurs on key business decisions. He is ranked third in his class at UMKC.
