Michael R. Thiessen Recognized as Pro Bono Spotlight by KCMBF for August

Lewis Rice member Michael R. Thiessen was recognized by Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation (KCMBF) as its Military Matters pro bono spotlight for August 2021. Military Matters highlights monthly a volunteer attorney who is exemplary in accepting referrals for service members and veterans in the Kansas City community. Michael spent nearly 10 years in active duty as a JAG officer at Richards Gebaur Air Force Base before going into private practice. He remained in the Air Force Reserves for many years before joining the Military Matters program as a volunteer at its inception.

Michael has extensive experience in sophisticated estate planning for a variety of estates. He is particularly knowledgeable on those involving family-owned businesses, and he provides thoughtful counsel on the transition of ownership. Michael advises his clients on multi-generational planning and the utilization of family limited partnerships, irrevocable life insurance trusts, qualified personal residence trusts, and sales to defective trusts. Also experienced in charitable estate planning, he handles matters such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, private foundations, and supporting organizations.
