John M. Hessel Selected as Legal Champion by Missouri Lawyers Media
February 17, 2025Lewis Rice member John M. Hessel was selected as a Legal Champion by Missouri Lawyers Media, an honor awarded to attorneys who make a lasting impact based on principle rather than verdict size. He was one of four recipients recognized at the Missouri Lawyers Awards on February 13, 2025, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
For nearly five decades, John has served as city attorney for Kirkwood and Florissant, advising municipal officials and advocating for First Amendment rights. He has represented local media outlets, taught at Washington University, and remained dedicated to public service. In 2008, he survived the tragic Kirkwood City Hall shooting, an event that deepened his commitment to his work and community.
Missouri Lawyers Media’s annual awards celebrate legal professionals for their significant contributions, including top verdicts, appellate advocacy, firm leadership, and the Lawyer of the Year. John’s achievements will be highlighted in a special section of Missouri Lawyers Weekly, both in print and online.

John represents business clients in commercial transactions and commercial litigation. His diverse client base spans a variety of industries, including service institutions, manufacturers, municipal corporations, financial institutions, publishing companies and local and national media entities. He is also the long-standing city attorney for Kirkwood and Florissant, Missouri.
