Phillips discusses her commitment to community service, driven by her experiences with educational inequities as a child in East St. Louis. Witnessing the disparities between her public and private schools ignited her desire to address unfairness. Her commitment to service grew at Loyola University, where she aided post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. After interning with a public defender’s office and clerking at the Missouri Supreme Court, she discovered her passion in civil practice, recognizing she could make an impact both within and beyond her legal work. Over the past decade, Jerina has served on boards for the Greater East St. Louis Community Fund and the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, helping provide scholarships to deserving high school seniors and a safe haven for children in East St. Louis. She also serves on a number of non-profit boards in the region, including Urban Sprouts Child Development Center, WEPOWER, and the Friends Advisory Board for the Gateway Arch Park Foundation. Her legal and community work often intersect, fulfilling her early dreams to make a difference.
